Tisha B'Av - the saddest day
Tisha B'Av is the saddest day in the Jewish calendar, and over the centuries many tragic events happened, or were traditionally said to have happened, on this date - from the destruction of both Temples, the expulsion from Spain in 1492 to the World War I in 1914. The sadness and mourning that Jews feel on this day are reflected in the various practices of Tisha B'Av, including abstaining from joyous activities like study of Torah, from eating and drinking, and from wearing leather.I am not fasting but I agree that it is necessary to remember the tragedies in order to establish continuity with the past.
There are many rituals and practices linked to Tish B'Av. I am not following any of them but all events that establish a connection with the history of the Jewish people are very interesting to me because it is a way to fell connected and little by little start to assimilate some of this history as my own.
