Building a traditional Jewish household

“How to run a traditional Jewish household“ by Blue Greenberg is an interesting book written by an amazing woman. So many things impressed me about this book.

I learnt that even the most mundane tasks are special in the traditional Jewish household. Most everyday activities have a blessing ascribed to them, and this elevation of the mundane to the divine led me to reflect upon daily life as a worshipful experience. I am not saying that I will start saying a blessing for everything, but I started seeing things differently. I caught myself cleaning my house every Friday, lighting Shabbat candles and thinking about how to integrate more tradition in my house. I do not have kids, but I want to start building the foundation for their Jewish heritage. I still have a long way to go, but as stubborn as I am, I will get there one day. This is a “must have” book for anyone interested in Judaism.

Hi Ruth,
I see that it has taken you so far about two years to convert; is this normal? I often consider conversion, but there are many obstacles, with a lot of that being family. I started reading a book on it. I admire your drive to convert.

Dear Neil,
There isn’t a schedule to follow for my conversion process. People that convert because of marriage will do it faster. You can even find reform rabbis that will make the conversion really fast.
As I have no reason to rush, I am enjoying the journey and learning as much as possible. Yes, family plays a huge part on process, without their support is difficult to go through it.
All the best, Ruth.
